Claims that Kevin Morais was involved in 1MDB probe "preposterous"

KUALA LUMPUR: Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali dismissed as "preposterous" on new claim that murdered deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais was involved in 1Malaysia Development Bhd investigation.

In a text message from Nanning, China, Apandi today strongly denied the allegation by Kevin's younger brother Charles Suresh Morais contained in a statutory declaration (SD) made public yesterday.

"Kevin was never involved in the 1MDB investigations. In fact, when he was transferred back to AG's Chambers in early July 2014, there was no report in respect of 1MDB yet!" stressed Apandi.

Apandi said that Suresh exposed himself to legal consequences on his claim that the eight men, including an army pathologist, charged with Kevin's murder had nothing to do with the crime.

"I need to state that when the brother (Suresh) starts insinuating that the current (eight) accused persons are not linked to Kevin's murder, he is seen to be interfering with the pending (murder) trial," said Apandi.

Apandi also labelled as "unfounded" allegations linked to Kevin's post-mortem.

Suresh, a 52-year-old businessman in the United States hotel sector, alleged that his younger sibling Datuk Richard Morais claimed Kevin's body from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) on Monday, in order to cover up alleged "criminal acts of those high up in the echelons of power in Malaysia".

Kevin, 55, who was previously seconded to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), was last seen leaving his Menara Duta apartment for work in his grey Proton Perdana on Sept 4.

Police received a report on the disappearance of the deputy head of the Appellate and Trial Division of the Attorney-General's Chambers at 7pm the following day.

Closed-circuit television camera recordings allegedly showed that he was abducted in Jalan Dutamas after a vehicle rammed into his Perdana.

His body was discovered nearly two weeks later, cemented in an oil drum dumped at a partly-flooded area in USJ 1, Subang Jaya.

On Sept 28, eight men were charged at the Magistrate's Courts here and Petaling Jaya on charges linked to Kevin's alleged murder.

Among them were army pathologist Colonel Dr R. Kunaseegaran, 44, who head the pathology lab at Hospital Angkatan Tentera Tuanku Mizan in Wangsa Maju.
