'Umno in good shape, but opposition has too many cancerous cells'

Question: How strong is Umno today?

Answer: Umno is experiencing a case of “bad flu”, although we are much better compared with opposition parties. It is as if they are suffering from cancer, with too many bad cells that need to be removed.

Nevertheless, Umno needs to buck up, to not let its guard down or take things for granted. The party must highlight the issues plaguing DAP and that the party will never walk the talk.

Question: Are there issues affecting Umno’s performance generally?

Answer: Yes, we have some teething problems that need to be resolved. That said, the opposition was never truly strong to begin with. But on Umno’s side, we need to remain united and stop bickering with each other.

But I believe Umno will perform well in the next general election, as always. We have the structure, system and strategy.

Question: How do you correlate the people’s support for Umno with the negative perception of its leadership?

Answer: There are 100 party branches that disagreed with the party’s leadership. The number, while negligible, is not something that should be overlooked. It is something we have anticipated after (Umno president) Datuk Seri Najib Razak expanded the party polls’ voting bloc, which now includes branch chiefs. In this instance, externally, the people’s support will remain subjective as they view all political parties as alike. Hence, we must ensure our track record and delivery are sound.

Question: How is Umno going to “neutralise” DAP at the next polls?

Answer: Judging from the controversies in DAP, I believe the party’s internal conflict will be its own undoing. I believe MCA, too, must exploit issues related to DAP. Some might retort with a question: “What more do Chinese voters want?” My answer would be: “Peace, education, jobs and maybe doing business.”

DAP’s slogan “Ini kali lah” (This is the time) in the last general election failed. Have DAP in Penang or the tripartite government in Selangor fulfilled their election promises? BN has fulfilled 95 per cent of its promises.

Question: What are the issues to be raised by Malacca Umno at the assembly?

Answer: Party unity is our utmost concern. Umno cannot continue to be in denial. We have to admit that Umno faces a test of trustworthiness, which can lead to a crisis of confidence if we do not address them well. We must take the bull by the horns and look at it as an impetus to move us forward.

Economically, there are too many little Napoleons in the system. We can move only an inch at a time. (Ironically), we have so many government-linked companies, agencies and ministries to boost the economy. They should assist the Malay agenda.
