KTMB wants to be world's first halal-certified train service

KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) is on its way towards becoming the world’s first halal-certified train service by Jan 2016.

Its president Lieutenant-Colonel (Rtd) Sarbini Tijan said if the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) certifies KTMB's service as halal, it would pull in more Muslim tourists and boost the nation's tourism industry.

"We are determined to make this happen because if everything goes as planned, the recognition as the world's first halal-certified train service would automatically boost the country's tourism industry.

"Muslim tourists from around the globe would feel confident in coming to the country as they know that when they travel long distance using KTMB's Electric Train Service (ETS), they can rest assured that the food served is halal-certified," he said.

Sarbini said he was confident KTMB would be able to receive the recognition from Jakim.

Meanwhile, KTMB received the National Record for the First Ladies-Only Commuter Coach from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), today.

He said the recognition came after its fifth year in providing the women's coach which started in April 28, 2010.

In conjunction with receiving the record, KTMB will be handing out 5,555 special vouchers for women worth RM2 which can be used on its routes.
