Twin awards for Upin & Ipin in Jakarta

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular homegrown animation series Upin & Ipin proved that it was still a force to be reckoned with, having garnered two wins at the Mom & Kids Awards 2015 in Jakarta yesterday.

It won the Most Loveable Cartoon and Most Loveable Cartoon Character awards at the inaugural event, which was broadcast live on Indonesia’s MNC TV.

Produced by Les' Copaque Production, Upin & Ipin defeated other strong contenders, Boboiboy (Animonsta Studios, Malaysia), Pada Zaman Dahulu (Les' Copaque Production), Adit & Sopo Jarwo (MD Animation, Indonesia) and Sofia The First (Disney Animation), that were nominated in the same categories.

Winners were determined by SMS voting among fans.

Founder and managing director of Les’ Copaque Production Burhanuddin Md Radzi said that the wins honoured Malaysia’s animation industry.

“It’s no secret that Indonesia’s market is tough to penetrate. So this recognition is definitely a personal achievement for the team at Les' Copaque,” he said when contacted by the NST today.

Burhanuddin who is still in Jakarta, said that the awards have strengthened the team’s belief that original content of high quality and rich in local culture, can be successful globally.

First released in 2007 as a six-episode series, Upin & Ipin features the life and adventures of the cute titular twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian village.

A live action and animation movie, Upin & Ipin: Jeng Jeng Jeng, is slated fo release next year.

Burhanuddin said that Les' Copaque will also be releasing a full 3D animation movie in 2017.
