Nikon's new kings of low light

LAS VEGAS: NIKON has unveiled two new dSLR bodies at the on-going Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, US. The professional full-frame D5 and the DX-format D500.

With the new 20.8-megapixel CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image-processing engine, the Nikon D5 is said to have phenomenal image quality and detail in every shot. The autofocus system now has 153 focus points and 99 cross-type sensors.

Equipped with an ISO range from 100 to 102400 (expandable to 3280000), the highest standard sensitivity in Nikon’s history, the camera can shoot even in the darkest conditions and beyond what the eyes can see.

Besides that, it shoots 4K UHD videos, and shoot up to 12 frames per second for still pictures with autofocus and auto exposure tracking between shots for up to 200 shots in RAW when using XQD memory cards.

The D500, meanwhile, is a DX-format dSLR camera that packs the incredible performance of the D5, Nikon's flagship FX-format model, into an agile body. The D500 incorporates the same powerful 153-point AF system as the D5, ensuring precise subject acquisition even during high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 10 fps.

It supports 4K UHD movies, meeting the demands of multimedia professionals, while the new EXPEED 5 image-processing engine enables it to deliver high-quality images and movies and realises a wide sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 51200, expandable to Hi 5 (ISO 1640000 equivalent).

The D500 combines the agility of the DX system with superior usability. It employs a touch-screen, tilting monitor, and features SnapBridge support, which enhances the value of your images via constant wireless connection with a smart device. The camera is compatible with the newly released MB-D17 Multi-Power Battery Pack (optional), which can be used with various types of battery.

Besides the camera, Nikon also marks its move into sport-action camera market with its KeyMission 360 action camera.

With an image sensor and lens combination on two opposite sides of the camera, captured images are combined in-camera to create a single realistic and high definition true 360-degree image output. The camera is waterproof to the depths of 30 metres even without a separate housing. These new products are expected to be available in the market in March, 2016, but there are no official prices for Malaysia at the moment.
