KUALA LUMPUR: Former Special Action Unit chief inspector Azilah Hadri is seeking royal clemency over the 2006 murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.
This was confirmed by former commando Azilah's counsel Datuk Hazman Ahmad when contacted today.
Hazman said that the petition for clemency would first be filed at the Selangor Palace, then copies would be served on the Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali this afternoon.
Any such petition would be heard by a Selangor Pardons Board comprising of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris, Apandi and Azmin, among others.
It is understood that only the state Pardons Board could hear such petition as the murder was committed at Mukim Bukit Raja, Shah Alam, between 10pm on Oct 19, 2006, and 1am the next day.
Hazman however declined to reveal further details on the clemency petition due to solicitor-client privilege.
On Jan 13 last year, the Federal Court overturned the acquittal of Azilah and fellow colleague former corporal Sirul Azhar Umar over the sensational killing.
However, Sirul was not present at that proceedings and was later detained in Australia. He is still under custody there.
