FAM to appoint new national coach tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will announce the new national senior coach tomorrow from three short-listed candidates.

FAM have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow evening in Petaling Jaya where it will announce either national youth coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee, former Darul Ta'zim handler Bojan Hodak or ex-Sarawak coach Robert Alberts as the successful candidate.

The coaching position has been left vacant since Dollah Salleh quit in September in the wake of the national team's 10-0 hammering by the United Arab Emirates in a World Cup qualifier.

Ong was placed in charge on a temporary basis following Dollah's resignation, winning two and losing three matches.

He is seen as the favourite to take over the job on a permanent basis though both Croatian Hodak and Dutchman Alberts have extensive experience of Malaysian football.

The new man's fist match in charge is expected to be a World Cup qualifier away to Saudi Arabia on March 24 before leading Malaysia into the 2019 Asian Cup qualifying matches in the middle of the year.

The new coach is also expected to be tasked with forming a team capable of challenging strongly for the AFF Cup in November and December after Dollah led Malaysia to the final in 2014.
