Stop spreading rumours on terror threats: IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar today called for an end to speculation about the security situation in the country.

Via his Twitter handle @KBAB51, the IGP said such speculation could cause unnecessary unease among the public.

"All quarters should stop any speculation about the state of the nation's security. Police are always on standby," he said.

Khalid also chided some members of the media who cited reports based on 'sources' and said this could be construed as rumour-mongering.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman in a statement, also urged an end to the spread of unverified news.

"Police never issued any statements which specifically stated any areas targeted by terror groups," it said.

Such news, it said, could instill fear among the public.

It said the IGP, via a media statement on Jan 15, had only stated that police would heighten the security and surveillance in public places to ensure public safety.

"An increase in the police presence in public places is to assure the public that police are always on standby."

Earlier today, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor in a press conference said the Kuala Lumpur city centre, Bangsar, Solaris, Publika, Hartamas, The Curve, and Bukit Bintang are among the locations targeted by terror groups.
