Indonesia studying Malaysia's anti-terror laws as reference

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia is studying Malaysia's anti-terrorism laws following the recent Jakarta terror attack.

Indonesian Anti-terrorism Agency director for international cooperation Petrus Golose said their government is in the process of amending their legislation on counter-terrorism by referring to Malaysian laws.

"The amendments will not make our anti-terrorism laws as stringent as in Malaysia. The rule of law and basic human rights need to be considered and we will focus more on the prevention of terrorism acts," he told reporters on the sidelines of the International Deradicalisation Conference (IDC) here today.

Petrus said the Indonesian authorities' efforts in tackling terrorism is also geared towards deradicalising perpetrators.

When asked about the differences between terrorism in Malaysia and Indonesia, he said he would not draw that comparison.

"The challenges faced by these two countries are different. Many local radical organisations in Indonesia have overtly announced their allegiance or association with terrorist groups such as Daesh or Al-Qaeda," he said.

On the mastermind behind the Jakarta terror attack, Bahrun Naim, Petrus said Bahrun had always used cyberspace to disseminate information to the media and this is what he is currently trying to do.

"He (Bahrun) is a cyberterrorism expert who is very well-connected with other terrorist organisations around the world.

"He is linked to Malay-speaking terrorist cells not only in Indonesia and Malaysia but all over the world," he said.

Petrus said he would discuss with his Malaysian counterparts at the conference on ways of formulating a counter-terrorism strategy collaboratively.

Bahrun is an Indonesian militant who leads a group of Malay-speaking fighters in Syria, Katibah Nusantara, which is aligned with the Islamic State (IS).

New Straits Times had reported that he had been accused of pulling the strings behind the Jakarta attacks that left eight people dead and more than 20 injured.
