Deadly Thaipusam accident: Cops waiting for lab report before charging BMW driver

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are still waiting for a full report from the chemistry and forensic department before they can proceed to charge the driver of a BMW who had rammed into six Thaipusam devotees at the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway on Jan 23.

City police chief Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said police have yet to receive the report as there were several items that needed to be completed by the department.

“We believe that the report will be released soon. After that, we can submit the report to the deputy public prosecutor,” he said after attending the city police contingent assembly at Dataran Kawad Baru, City Police headquarters in Jalan Hang Jebat today.

It was reported that the BMW had rammed into six Thaipusam devotees who were in a procession from Senawang to Batu Caves, killing three of them instantly and injuring others.

The BMW driver immediately sped off after the crash. The car was found abandoned near the Lekas Expressway about 1pm. A few hours after that, the 25-year-old driver surrendered himself at the Tun HS Lee traffic police station.

On a separate note, City Criminal Investigation chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said police have not ruled out the possibility of an inside man being involved in a robbery case which saw losses of RM1.6 million cash.

“Police are in the midst of investigating the case and have yet to make any arrests. We believe that the robbery was done by an inside man,” he added.

It was reported on Jan 26, a group of robbers armed with parang, knives and a pistol escaped with RM1.6 million cash belonging to a gold distributing company in Jalan Klang Lama.

In the 10am incident, two of the company’s workers comprising a runner and a security guard, aged 32 and 54 respectively, were riding separate motorcycles towards a bank in Taman Desa to deposit the money when they were stopped by 11 men on five motorcycles and a car.

The robbers first knocked down the security guard’s motorcycle and pointed a pistol and knife to the two victims, before snatching the bag containing the cash from the other victim. The security guard sustained a broken shoulder, while the runner sustained a minor injury.
