NIOSH wants more precautions taken in hospitality industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has called for the implementation of 'Occupational Safety and Health' (OSH), to prevent accidents in the hospitality industry.

Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the industry, involving hotels, food establishments, tour operators and relevant local authorities should take a serious view of accidents.

"It is time for all those involved in the hospitality industry to take a serious view of the frequent occurrence of accidents and fatalities involving tourists and the public, in various parts of the country especially during the holiday season.

"A commitment to health and safety makes good business sense for tour operators and those involved in the hospitality industry to prevent accidents involving their guests and employees," he said.

He said meticulousness about safety should be the core value of workers in the industry as they engage in manual handling of items such as as hazardous substances and dangerous goods.

"If OSH is not practiced, it can lead to accidents resulting in injuries or even deaths.

"OSH plays an important part in the hospitality and tourism industry to prevent accidents," he said.
