Three youths injured in CNY firecracker mishap

GEORGE TOWN: Three youths sustained burns to their bodies following a mishap after lighting up firecrackers outside their flat in Nibong Tebal here yesterday.

The three, including a woman, were injured while they were celebrating Chinese New Year with their family at Taman Terkukur flats at 3.50pm.

South Seberang Prai district police chief Supt Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said the three, aged between 17 and 20, were hurt after lighting up a 100m long ‘Chinese-style’ firecracker.

He said the victims sustained injuries on their body and fingers and received first aid at the scene.

"The two men are receiving treatment at Sungai Bakap hospital while the girl has been hospitalised in Penang Hospital," he said.

Checks by NST showed that the girl sustained serious injuries on her face and body. She is now warded in the semi critical zone.

"The victim has been brought for a CT-scan.

"We will observe the patient first before moving her to the normal ward," said a doctor from the Emergency and Trauma department.
