Special courts nationwide to handle backlog of drug cases

MALACCA: The government has agreed to set up special courts nationwide to handle the backlog of drug cases in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there was a huge backlog of drug-related cases in the country, and the initiative was meant to address the problem.

"That is why we have agreed to establish special courts across the nation to handle such cases," he told reporters after attending a closed-door brainstorming session on drug problems here today.

Present at the meeting were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Attorney-General Tan Sri Apandi Ali.

Zahid, who is Home Minister said a National Drugs Policy paper would also will be tabled to the Cabinet soon.

He said the paper deals with drug enforcement, rehabilitation and eradication matters.

Zahid also said that the police STING unit had made 26,000 drug-related arrests last year and confisticated drugs worth more than RM500 million.
