65 illegal immigrants detained in Ops Sapu

KLUANG: A total of 65 illegal immigrants were rounded up in a pre-dawn operation Ops Sapu here today.

The 2.30am raid at a workers' quarters in Bukit Cantik oil palm plantation in Kahang here, was carried out by Johor Immigrations Department together with personnel from the Batu Pahat and Kluang Immigration Offices.

Operation chief Rashidin Rahmat, who is the state deputy assistant director, said there were four Bangladeshis, one Nepalese, 54 Indonesian men and six Indonesian women detained in the raid.

Also present was Johor Immigration enforcement chief Masri Adul.

Rashidin said the illegal immigrants were investigated under the Immigration Act 1963 for entering the country illegally.

"The foreigners aged 49 to 62 did not have valid passes nor permits," he said in a statement.

"Most of the illegal immigrants were asleep during the raid after a hard day's work at the plantation. However, some did try to escape when they realised the place was being raided," he added.

All the illegal immigrants are currently at the Setia Tropika Immigration Office.
