Sarawak mulls making July 22 a public holiday

MIRI: The state government is considering making July 22 a public holiday to commemorate Sarawak's independence day from the British colony.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the proposal, however, needs to be looked into and deliberated by the state cabinet before it is approved.

"The date July 22 is synonymous with the day Sarawak gained its independence from the British colonisation," said Adenan in his speech during a dinner hosted by the Sarawak United People's Party's Miri division here today.

Also in attendance were SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, and Adenan's wife Puan Sri Jamilah Anu.

Adenan also reminded all parties that the proposal should not be construed or misinterpreted as an attempt by Sarawak to secede from Malaysia.

"The proposal is just for Sarawak to commemorate this symbolic day.

"We will still celebrate Malaysia Day and Merdeka."
