Background checks conducted on Syrian refugees in Malaysia: Zahid

SHAH ALAM: The government has conducted background checks to ensure that none of the Syrian refugees coming in the country have been involved with the Daesh.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government wanted to prioritise the safety and security of the country but emphasised that the goal was to allow the refugees to temporarily carry on with their lives here.

"The first Syrian refugees arrived last year. Five families are already here. They were brought here temporarily to live in Malaysia for a certain period of time before returning to their homeland, once Syria is peaceful.

"We priorities families of students who are already studying here, those who are working here and also Syrian professionals like doctors and engineers working here in Malaysia.

"I hope Malaysians are kind-hearted. Just like how we helped victims during the time of (the conflict in) Bosnia Herzegovina, accept the Syrians in Malaysia," he said at the launch of Cervello Tres, the sole distributor of MAD Velocifero Malaysia.
