Royal insult: Lawyer slams Kit Siang, Mkini for claiming Agong was reading out "govt's speech"

KUALA LUMPUR: Lim Kit Siang's remarks that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah was only reading out a speech text prepared by the government in Parliament today, has been labeled an insult to the royal institution.

Lawyer and activist Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz said Lim and pro-opposition news portal Malaysiakini, which reported the DAP supremo's statement earlier today, had undermined the credibility of the royal insitution.

Khairul Azam said he will lodge a police report tomorrow on Malaysiakini's article carrying Lim's statement.

"I believe that the news report had clearly undermined the credibility of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's institution and is an insult to the King," he said.

He said he would lodge the report at the Sentul police headquarters tomorrow.

"I invite all media members, non-government organisations as well as individuals to join me tomorrow to express our anger and urge the authorities to bring the force of the law against all these repeat offenders," he said in a text message to the NST.

Earlier today, the news portal reported that Lim, in his comment on the King's opening address for this year's Parliament session, had said: "The (text of the) Agong's speech is (prepared) by the government."
