National pride at stake as Msian pairs square off in All England q-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: It will be a matter of pride when independent pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong play compatriots Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in the men’s doubles quarter-finals of the All England Badminton Championships in Birmingham today.

On Thursday, the unseeded Kien Keat-Boon Heong caused a major upset in the competition by overcoming world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia 21-15, 15-21, 21-17 in 49 minutes.

The World No 16 V Shem-Wee Kiong also made it through after a 17-21, 24-22, 23-21 win over fifth seeds Chai Biao-Hong Wei of China in the other second round match.

For the record, it will be the first meeting between the Malaysian pairs in an international competition and both are expected to be inspired as they are fighting for Olympics berths to the Rio Games in August.
