Cargo for engineering company turns out to be 200 kg of cocaine worth RM65mil

BUKIT MERTAJAM: An engineering company owner was charged with trafficking RM65mil worth of cocaine here today at the magistrate's court.

Customs department officers found over 200 slabs believed to be illegal drugs during an inspection of cargo addressed to Tat San Engineering Sdn Bhd.

The containers were supposed to be used for imported scrap metal.

The discovery subsequently led to the arrest of Yu Beng Chuah, 49, who was specified as the recipient of the cargo.

Yu allegedly committed the offense on Feb 24 around 4.49pm at the Royal Malaysian Custom Department's logistics storeroom in Jalan Perusahaan Prai here by trafficking 278.342 kg of drugs, believed to be cocaine.

The offence under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 is punishable under Section 39B(2) with a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Magistrate Dianne Ningrad Nor Azhar set May 18 for mention pending the chemistry report.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Malik Awang Kechik from the Customs Department prosecuted while Yu was represented by his lawyer Eddy Kwang.
