'I don't know', says Irwan on Bank Negara governor appointment

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah said he is unaware of whether he will be replacing Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz as Bank Negara governor next week.

The Treasury Secretary-General told the New Straits Times that “he does not know” if he is confirmed to be the new Malaysian central bank chief.

“I myself don’t know. I don’t know… don’t ask me too much.

“I cannot say more than that. I don’t want to say anything,” he said when contacted today.

According to a The Wall Street Journal report today citing unidentified sources, Irwan is expected to be named as the new Bank Negara head by the government next week after formal confirmation by Yang di -Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim.

The financial daily said that Irwan, who is a member of Bank Negara's board, will replace Zeti who is retiring in April after 16 years as governor.
