AlphaGo wins battle of man versus machine

KUALA LUMPUR: The Go-playing computer program, AlphaGo, has defeated the best Go player of the last decade, Lee Sedol, at the fifth and final game of the Google DeepMind Challenge Match, in Seoul, South Korea on Tuesday. The match ended at 4-1 in AlphaGo's favour.

In a very close game, AlphaGo played as white and won by resignation after 280 moves. Both AlphaGo and Lee used their entire two hours of playtime, and Lee went through two byo-yomi overtime periods.

With AlphaGo’s victory, Google DeepMind will donate the US$1 million (RM4.14 million) in prize money to UNICEF, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) charities, and Go organisations.
