Enough water for Taiping Zoo animals

TAIPING: The management of Taiping Zoo is monitoring its 1,300 residents to ensure they do not succumb to heatstroke.

Zoo director Dr Kevin Lazarus said thanks to intermittent rain in the area the past week the zoo had ample water to cater to its animals.

“Since the start of the dry weather, none of our animals has fallen sick. There are 150 species here,” he
told the New Straits Times yesterday.

“There is ample supply of water even though we have been receiving intermittent rain here,” he said, adding that the supply of water in the zoo could sustain its animals for a month if the hot weather persisted.

A check by NST at the zoo yesterday showed the animals huddling in the shade or swimming in ponds to avoid the scorching heat.

Many visitors carried bottles of water to stay hydrated.

He said the zoo’s management had installed an automatic water management system to provide clean water for its animals.

He also said the zoo was upgrading its cages to provide a better ecosystem for the animals.

He added that the upgrades would be completed in May.
