Melaka United goalkeeper on life support after struck by lightning

MALACCA: Melaka United reserve goalkeeper Marco Stefan Petrovski is now stable but on life support in hospital after being struck by lightning during training yesterday.

Malacca Hospital director Datuk Dr Za'aba Baba said the footballer was initially treated at the hospital's Emergency and Trauma department upon admission yesterday evening.

Petrovski was given further treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) yesterday.

"The patient (Petrovski) was earlier examined and treated by emergency specialists before being given further treatment at the ICU.

"He is now in stable condition but on life support," he said.

Petrovski was reportedly struck by lightning while he was training with his teammates at Padang Sepuluh in Krubong here at 5pm on Tuesday.

Malacca President Cup manager Khairi Anuar Ahmad said Petrovski and defender Muhammad Afiq Azuan, 21, were rushed to the Malacca Hospital.

Afiq received initial treatment but was later cleared of being in any danger.

Melaka United president and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron visited the players at the hospital at about 12.30am last night.

Idris said he was glad that both players were in stable condition.

“Petrovski's parents, who are in Portugal and Australia, have been informed and we have provided them with flight tickets to fly here."
