Telecommunication sector to benefit greatly from TPPA

SINGAPORE: Malaysia's manufacturing, telecommunication and electronics sectors are set to greatly benefit from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPPA), said Asean former secretary general Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

Surin said the potential of Asean countries that join the trade pact were in their own uniqueness and position in the economy even before joining TPP.

"Each of the Asean economies are boutiques of their own by themselves. Malaysia, for example, will definitely make use of the membership to attract more trade and investment into the country," he said during a trade session at Maybank Kim Eng Invest Asean 2016 here today.

On the other hand, Surin said there will be a spillover effect of TPP to Asean countries who are not on board yet from the ones who are.

"If we were to create wealth here in the region among us and cross invest with each other, then the fact that Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia are already in the trade pact, is certainly going to infuse some dynamism into the Asean landscape," he said.
