(Motor racing) Crash ends it for Weiron in Pro Mazda Championship

WEIRON Tan enjoyed mixed fortunes at the Alabama leg of the Pro Mazda Championship at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham over the weekend.

The Team Pelfrey driver did well to qualify in third place despite the wet conditions and went on to finish fourth in the first race on Saturday, crossing the line in 41 minutes and 3.1506 seconds to collect 19 valuable championship points.

Pelfrey teammates Pato O'Ward (Mexico) and American Aaron Telitz finished first and second on 40:55.65s and 40:56.38s, respectively, while Canadian Garett Grist of Juncos Racing (41:02.87s) completed the podium.

Starting from seventh in the second race on Sunday, Weiron battled with Australian Jake Parsons (Juncos) from the start but a clash in the fifth turn saw the racing coming to an early end for both drivers.

Weiron was unhappy with the crash but is looking forward to putting his championship hopes back on track.

“Saturday’s race was really competitive and despite not being able to get around Garrett, it was a great to see Team Pelfrey dominating," said the 21-year-old.

"It was, however, a real disappointment to be out so early in the second race. Jake and I were really close, I was alongside him on the straight heading down to turn five with me on the inside. He squeezed me onto the grass and kept going.”

Weiron, who came in third in the second race at the season opening leg in St Petersburg last month, is currently fifth in the overall standings on 69 points.

The next leg of the Pro Mazda series will be held at the Indianapolis Grand Prix Circuit on May 12-14.
