El Nino unearths pre-war shipwreck in Sungai Pahang [VIDEO]

PEKAN: A pre-war shipwreck, left abandoned under water, emerged recently near Kampung Tanjung here when the Sungai Pahang river water level dropped drastically due to the El Nino phenomenon.

The sudden discovery has prompted hundreds of villagers to flock to the river to explore the rusty shipwreck which had suffered extensive damage.

Paloh Hinai village headman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said the villagers first noticed the shipwreck some two months ago while searching for "etak"(a type of clam) along the river.

"At first they though it was a floating log before later noticing the ship's boom. As the days passed, the shallow water revealed more parts of the ship but sadly most of the parts are damaged," he said.

He said the wreck is believed to be from a ship which sunk in Sungai Pahang here in early 1915.
