Damages for ex-Perak MB in defamation case to be known on June 16

KUALA LUMPUR: Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd (TV3) will know on June 16 how much damages it needs to pay former Perak menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin over a defamatory broadcast report.

TV3's counsel Liew Teck Huat said the High Court set the decision date

during today's damage-assessment hearing in Nizar's defamation suit

against the TV station, over the Sultan of Johor's bid for car registration number "WWW 1".

On Feb 25, 2014, the Court of Appeal found TV3 liable over its report.

The ruling reversed the High Court's dismissal of Nizar's suit on

April 12, 2013.

The Federal Court upheld the finding on Feb 25 this year, ruling that there was no judicial bias in the Court of Appeal's decision.

Counsel Mohd Fitri Asmuni today confirmed that his client Nizar was

cross-examined during the hearing in the chambers of High Court deputy registrar Hanie Dzatul Akhmar Zulkefli.

Fitri said among the arguments raised was on the extent of the damage caused by TV3's report against Nizar.

When met after the matter, Nizar claimed that the TV3 report had caused him to lose in party elections at the "division, state and federal level".

On July 10, 2012, Nizar filed the suit against TV3 over its Buletin

Utama news programme on May 30, 2012.

TV3, in a one-minute news clip, had interviewed Johor police chief

Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Sharif who said police had set up a committee to probe a Twitter post.

The probe was in response to eight police reports lodged against Nizar.

TV3 had also quoted the Johor crown prince from his tweet in response to Nizar's posting.

At the end of the news segment, TV3 stated that Nizar had apologised to the ruler.
