Four dirty eateries in Terengganu shut down for two weeks

KUALA TERENGGANU: Four dirty eateries in Kuala Terengganu and one in Kuala Nerus have been ordered to shut down for two weeks after running foul of health regulations.

Terengganu Health Department director Dr Mohammad Omar said the four outlets were out of 93 premises inspected his officers in an integrated food hygiene operation with the Kuala Terengganu City Council from April 27 to 28.

“The four eateries were from the city and Kuala Nerus. Apart from having malfunctioning refrigerators, the premises were also found to be dirty and untidy.

“We also found that their food handlers did not undergo typhoid vaccination and had failed to observe personal cleanliness,” he said.

Dr Mohammad said that the cafeterias at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu were also not spared from inspection.

All in, he said, a total of 364 food handlers were screened, with 78 of them ordered to get anti-typhoid injections.

“We have so far hauled up 66 individuals to court for committing various offences under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

“Last year, a total of 7,983 premises in Terengganu were inspected, out of which 143 were ordered closed while 780 summonses were issued to outlet operators,” he said.
