(Athletics) Towering Ng Ian Biao leads Sarawak's charge in throws

KUALA TERENGGANU: Sarawak continued to dominate the throws as Ng Ing Biao won the boys' Under-18 discus in record-breaking fashion at the Malaysian Schools Athletics Championships on Thursday.

The Selangor boys' 4x100m relay team also smashed a 12-year-old meet record while Sabah's boys' Under-15 relay quartet also set a new mark to raise number of rewritten records to nine after three days of action at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium.

Ing Biao, 16, followed up his win in the Under-15 discus in Malacca last year by bagging the Under-18 gold with a 52.84m throw to erase the record of 49.81m set by Faris Hazim Jamaluddin of Selangor in 2014.

"I am happy to have won the gold medal even though the conditions were very hot but I did not let it bother me," said the strapping Ing Biao, from Sarikei and who stands at a towering 1.86m.

The Selangor Under-18 boys sped to gold in 41.32 seconds to dip under the old record of 41.50 held by Johor since 2003.

Sabah's Under-15 quartert clocked 42.85 seconds to erase Malacca's record of 43.17 set in 2013.

In other events, pole vaulter Chan Sau Mun improved on two successive second-place finishes to finally land gold with a 3.20m clearance.

That was a new personal best for Sau Mun which vaults her into second in the national rankings behind Chuah Yu Tian's 2016 best of 3.50m.

Pahang's Koong Jia Lin had a double reason to celebrate when she won gold medals in the girls' Under-15 800m and 1,500m, running the two finals just four hours apart.

Jia Lin won 800m gold in 2:24.87s, a huge five seconds ahead of second-placed teammate M. Kogilla (2:29.87) before returning at night to claim 1,500m gold in 5:04.36s, also by a sizable margin from Negri Sembilan's silver medallist Ainur Shafiqah Azmi (5:10.13).

Jia Lin's 800m final run was even faster than the winning time in the Under-18 final, won by Nur Hanan Nasriah Rafiai of Kelantan in 2:27.44s.

"I surprised myself by setting my personal bests in both events. I had expected to win the 800m but not the 1,500m," said Jia Lin, 14, who hails from Bentong but studies at the Bukit Jalil Sports School.

Sabah's Sunik Muslimin was denied a record by the wind factor after he leapt to 14.35 metres to win the boys' Under-15 triple jump but with a tailwind of 2.1m/s, the record of 14.29m remained.

Sarawak remained top of the medal tally with a haul of 10 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze as hosts Terengganu (7-5-4) rose to second while Kuala Lumpur (7-3-3) to third, followed by Selangor (6-6-5), Johor (6-5-10) and Pahang (6-4-4).
