Strong wind, downpour leaves trail of damage in Perlis [VIDEO]

KANGAR: Perlis was hit by strong winds and a downpour over a near two-hour spell this afternoon, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake in several locations.

The state Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Department said no less than 40 reports of uprooted trees and subsequent damages were reported as at 2.45pm.

The department is expecting more similar reports to come in.

Among the locations hit were Santan, Jejawi, Behor Mali, Arau, Kampung Bakong, Kok Kelang, Ulu Pauh, Abi, Sungai Batu Pahat, Sempering and also Kangar.

Notable incidents included damage caused by the strong winds and heavy rain on the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital signboard, the advertisement billboard at the Persiaran Jubli Emas roundabout, and also the compound of the Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium Complex, where several tents, which had been set up for state programmes, were damaged.

Another source revealed that the wind speed reached up to 8.6 metres a second or 31km per hour.
