Smugglers seized with RM500k of cooking oil

SANDAKAN: Marine police foiled an attempt to smuggle out 1,200 packets of cooking oil worth almost half a million ringgit near here, today.

The illegal shipments were found onboard a tugboat following a search by a marine police team at a private jetty in Batu Sapi.

State Marine Police commander Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Madun said police also arrested a man suspected of being involved in the smuggling activity.

“The supplies were to be smuggled out to a neighbouring country. The seizure comprising the boat and cooking oil is estimated to be worth about RM547,000.

“The case will be investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and will be referred to the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry for further action,” he said.
