Why is PKR staying silent on hudud, asks MIC

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth chief Sivaraajh Chandran said PKR should make a stand on hudud and not stay silent on the crucial issue.

He said PKR president DatukSeri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, deputy president Azmin Ali, and vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar are obliged to speak out on the matter.

"Are they for hudud?

"It has been a trend for them to blame Barisan Nasional (BN) for all the failures to stop Pas from advancing its hudud agenda.

“Pas were with them since the Reformasi era; are they saying they failed to convince Pas to drop hudud?,” he told the New Straits Times.

Sivarajah said the hudud issue is a battle that needs cooperation by MPs from both side of the political divide.

He said bipartisan support from both BN and the Opposition is the only way to defeat Pas from their agenda to enforce hudud.

“At the same time, PAS should stop bringing hudud to Parliament as this does not represent the Malaysian spirit,” he said.

Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang submitted a Private Member's Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) 2016.

The motion to debate the bill was passed but Hadi requested for the debate to be postponed to the next parliament sitting that will commence in October.

Abdul Hadi requested for the tabling of the bill to be postponed due to time constraints.

He wanted to give an opportunity to all members to have more time to debate the Bill.
