Four illegal fishermen caught with 50kg haul of fish and prawns

PONTIAN: Four fishermen were detained by the police two nautical miles off Pontian waters yesterday for fishing without a valid permit.

Region Two marine police commander Assistant Commisioner Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said the fishermen, two Malaysians and two Indonesians aged between 35 and 50, were caught during an operation under Op Gelora at 3.30pm yesterday.

"Police seized 50kg of their catch comprising fish and prawns worth RM15,000. Two boats were also seized in the operation," he said.

He said the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 for fishing illegally without a permit.

"We will intensify our monitoring in the areas to curb these irresponsible acts from recurring," he said.
