More Cambodian maids for Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has agreed to allow more foreign workers from Cambodia, particularly domestic maids to work in the country.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Cambodia has expressed interest in sending more people to work in Malaysia.

Najib was speaking at a joint press conference with his Cambodian counterpart Prime Minister Hun Sen, today.

Najib said Cambodia is also keen to increase the level trade, which has been flat in the past years.

“In this regard we want the joint commission to meet soon to discuss areas of mutual interest,” he said.

Earlier, Najib and Hun Sen witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Malaysia and Cambodia on the International Volunteers Programme of MyCorps in Cambodia, an MoU between Malaysia and Cambodia on Information and Broadcasting Cooperation, and a Letter of Intent between the two governments on agricultural cooperation.

Najib also said Cambodia wants Malaysia's help to increase its level of agriculture production and its rice production supply chain.

He added Malaysia has taken note of Cambodia's request for assistance in Halal food production and certification as well as to have more Malaysian companies participate in the construction industry.

Four Malaysian universities would be offering Cambodian students opportunities to pursue their Master's studies in the country through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation (MTCP) Asean scholarship, he said.

Both countries have also agreed that there is a need to conclude an agreement on double taxation and human trafficking, Najib added.

Meanwhile, Hun Sen hoped that Cambodian would garner training, jobs, skills and experience from Malaysia.

He also said they looked forward to the production of halal food for Cambodian Muslims and increased trade in the area.
