National Water Resources Bill to be tabled this year

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Water Resources Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament by the year-end, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri said the ministry is in the process of getting feedback from the state governments before it could be tabled.

"We are currently giving explanations to each state on the (content of the) bill," he said.

The bill is among the efforts being made to address the supply of treated water, which was badly hit by the recent El-Nino phenomenon.

"This is despite Malaysia receiving rainfall of 2,900mm every year. To address this, the Drainage and Irrigation Department had conducted a study and came up with suggestions which we later used in the drafting of the bill.

"The other effort is the development of National Water Balance System (Nawabs)," he said in reply to a question by Senator Abdul Shukor Mohd Sultan.
