Reactions: Malaysian perspectives to Britain's exit from the EU

Below are reactions from a Malaysian perspective to the outcome of the referendum on Britain's departure from the European Union:

Vicki Treadell, British High Commissioner to Malaysia:

"We welcome Prime Minister Najib's statement. The UK and Malaysia are important partners and this does not change.

"This is a historic decision by the British people, they have made the choice to leave the European Union (EU). The UK government will now work towards delivering the will of the people and commence the formal and legal process of leaving the EU.

"I and my team at the British High Commission will continue to focus on further strengthening our relationship with Malaysia for the mutual interests our countries.

"The UK economy is fundamentally strong. We remain the fifth largest economy in the world, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the G7, G20 and NATO. We continue to be the only member of those groups which spends both 2% of GDP on defence and security and 0.7% on helping others through our global development assistance programmes. This is the UK's place in the world."

Securities Commission Chairman Tan Sri Ranjit Ajit Singh:

“The market has showed the highly anticipated volatility of the Brexit impact. Different markets reacting differently. Malaysia has the breadth and depth to manage the impact of any volatility. We had seen market condition adjusted orderly, we had seen the market in the past has reacted well to excess volatility. Our view is that the market will adjust to reach an equilibrium, the long term implication has not been fully reflected yet but as far as Malaysia market is concerned, we see orderly conditions to prevail. We are monitoring the development and believe that market players are well capitalised and are able to absorb any reaction that may occur. So far, market conditions have been manageable in terms of the impact.

"We are keeping a close watch on the implications to the financial market, industry and economy. What is clear is that we must be able to ensure and demonstrate our commitment towards open trade and the advantages it provides to Malaysia and ASEAN. These will have implications for our markets.”
