Malaysia not expecting post-Brexit turmoil

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is not expecting any major turmoil in terms of trade and investment over the next few days in the wake of Britain voting out of the European Union (EU) last week.

Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said currently there is no disruption in terms of trade and investment into Malaysia.

"Business is as usual for now," he told reporters at a press conference after the 15th anniversary celebration of Scope International (M) Sdn Bhd.

However, Mustapa said Malaysia would need to monitor the events that will unfold in the next two years when Brexit is finalised.

"Some EU countries are also thinking of similar course of action.

Those are the kind of things that we need to monitor," he added.

Meanwhile, Standard Charted Bank, headquartered in the UK, viewed that Brexit is not impacting its businesses in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

"There is nothing that we can see currently that would impact our ability to serve our customers in our markets," said Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim.
