AirAsia to continue using LCCT name to promote airline

PUTRAJAYA: AirAsia will continue using the term Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) for its marketing strategies to promote the airline.

AirAsia Bhd Group chief executive officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said the airline will continue to market itself as low cost, and use LCCT in its internal marketing campaign.

"The name (of the airport) is not for us to change.

"It doesn't matter what we call the airport. The main message is to promote the fact that we are a low cost hub (and) that has been understood clearly by (Transport Minister) Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai."

Fernandes was speaking to reporters after his two-hour long meeting with Liow at the ministry here, today.

Also present was AirAsia CEO Aireen Omar.

The row over the renaming of klia2 escalated last week after AirAsia vowed that it would not budge from calling the terminal ‘LCCT2’ or Low Cost Carrier Terminal 2, saying that it must be re-positioned as a low-cost terminal.

Aireen had said it would be a wake-up call for AirAsia to be recognised as a key player in the low-cost carrier sector, not just in Malaysia but also in Asean.

The government had insisted that it will not rename Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) despite AirAsia’s wishes, saying that klia2 served as part of the government’s plans to position Malaysia as an aviation hub, regionally and internationally.

Liow, however, had said the Transport Ministry acknowledged AirAsia’s intention to brand klia2 as a low-cost terminal, as part of its efforts to bring more travellers to Malaysia.

On the meeting, Fernandes said the meeting was "positive", adding that Liow had come up with several good suggestions for the airlines.

He however declined to elaborate further.
