Malaysian student feared missing in Istanbul blast now safely home

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian student who was reportedly missing following the terror attack on Istanbul's Ataturk airport, is now safely home.

Adam Roslan, 22, who was met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today, shared with NST the 17-hour ordeal he went through after he became separated from his classmate Mohd Amirul Azmer, 22, moments before the first explosion went off.

Adam and Amirul, both Moscow Aviation Institute students, had missed their flight back to Malaysia and had to buy new flight tickets, mere minutes before the carnage broke.

"I left my phone and backpack with Amirul at a restaurant at an upper level to go to the ATM to withdraw cash to buy flight tickets to Malaysia.

"As I was making my way back to Amirul, the first explosion went off.

"The ceiling caved in just a few metres from me so I sprinted in the opposite direction," he said.

As Adam ran for his life, surrounded by screams and cries of panic, another explosion occured a few metres to his right where a crowd was also attempting to flee.

"My right ear was ringing and I had debris or shrapnel clinging to my trousers and hair. I was lucky to escape unhurt as the impact was cushioned by the crowd nearby," he said.

Adam made his way out of the airport and left for a nearby hotel with two other tourists as the authorities had cordoned off the area.

"After a few hours trying to look for Amirul, I left the airport and spent a night at a hotel 10 minutes away from the airport," he said.

Adam was finally reunited with Amirul the next day before boarding the flight back to Malaysia.

At the KLIA, Adam was welcomed home by his mother Mahiran Mohd Noor, 47, and younger brother, Arif Roslan, 20.
