Construction, maintenance work on all Malaysian roads halted until July 13

KUANTAN: All construction and maintenance work at highways, federal and state roads will be temporarily suspended from today until July 13.

The move, according to the Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof is to ensure smooth flow of traffic as many are expected to return to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

He said emergency and critical works, however, are excluded from the temporary cessation.

"Apart from that, the Public Works Department and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) have also set up patrol teams to monitor accidents and road damage," he said after the launch of 'Coffee Break' in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri here today.

Meanwhile Fadillah said, road accident cases in the country remain high despite continuous awareness programmes held by the government.

"For the record, the number of fatal cases recorded by the police during Hari Raya last year had increased to 303 cases compared to 217 cases in 2014," he said.

Fadillah said the negative attitude of many drivers such as cutting queues and speeding have contributed to the increase in the accident cases.
