Gov't allocated RM730 million for SJKT since 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has allocated RM730 million for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of the Tamil national type schools (SJKT) in the country since 2010.

MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the allocation was proof the government had never neglected the welfare and development of the 520 SJKT nationwide.

“There will be an additional seven SJKT, of which two have been completed while five others are still waiting for the land issue to be resolved,” he told reporters after officiating the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the SJKT Ampang new block here today.

Also present was Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also Health Minister, said RM1 million had been allocated for building the school’s additional block to accomodate an increase in the number of students.

SJKT Ampang has only 30 students when it was first built in 1953 and the new block will have six classrooms to accomodate the 400 students at present.

In a similar development, he said the Education Ministry was also in efforts to move the SJKT previously located at plantations to urban areas.

“About 60 per cent of the SJKT have been transfered to the towns from the plantation areas as there are currently more Indian students in the urban areas where there are limited SJKT,” he added. --BERNAMA
