Enforce speed limiters on all buses immediately, urges Liow

BENTONG: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had called for the immediate enforcement of the installation of speed limiters in express and intercity buses.

He said the system had been implemented for awhile, and his ministry has instructed Puspakom to ensure that all express and intercity buses that pass through their centres for inspections to have the system in the vehicles.

“This system is very important towards ensuring thaat buses do not exceed the pre-set speed limit," he told reporters at the Civil Defence Department Hari Raya open house in Bentong, here today.

At the same time, Liow cautioned bus operators that they must not use the new enforcement as an excuse to raise bus fares.

“They shouldn’t raise prices as the system only involves a minimal cost and has been introduced for years. It is time we enforce it,” he said.

Asked on the timeline the bus operators have to install the system, Liow said Puspakom will advise his ministry on the matter soon.

Meanwhile, Liow said his ministry has also asked for the introduction of an integrated system to monitor traffic summonses.

He said the current system will be integrated to enable the Road Transport Department (RTD) to reject any application of driver’s licence renewal if an individual is found to have outstanding traffic summonses from any traffic authorities, including the police, RTD or Land Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD).

“We will not be creating a new system but instead integrate the existing one. RTD will take action as the Road Transport Act is within its jurisdiction,” he said.

He said the Kejara system will also be reinstated and the demerit points system will be used to help curb traffic offenders.

Liow was in Bentong to launch a free online tuition website for school children in Bentong - bentongtuition.com - in collaboration with renowned tutor Sunny Lee.

Liow. who is also Bentong member of parliament, said he hopes the initiative by his office and the Bentong Education Department will help boost the academic level of students in the district.

The new interactive and attractive e-learning site is expected to allow parents in Bentong to save up to RM600 a month in tuition fees for their children.

"The website is free for all students in Bentong. I hope they will make full use of it and benefit from it,” he said.

The website is available at schools, public library, Urban Transformation Centres, public Internet centres in Bentong and can be accessed using any mobile Internet devices, laptops or computers.
