Najib on Turkey: Democracy and will of people must always prevail

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today condemned the attempted military coup in Turkey and stressed out that democracy of a country and the will of the people must always prevail.

“I condemn the attempted coup in Turkey and resulting bloodshed. Democracy, and the will of the people, must always prevail,” he said in his official Twitter @NajibRazak today.

Earlier today, Najib had asked Malaysians who are now stranded in Turkey following the coup attempt to remain calm and stay safe.

He also urged Malaysians in the affected cities to be in contact with the Malaysian Embassy in Ankara for any further assistance.

According to the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra), a total of 260 Malaysians, including 180 students, in Turkey are reported to be safe following the attempted coup by the Turkish military.

International media reported that death toll in the coup attempt has risen to 90, with 1,154 wounded, and a total of 1,563 military officers have been detained throughout Turkey. --BERNAMA
