Wan Ahmad Nizam steps down as Terengganu FA president

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu Football Association president Datuk Wan Ahmad Nizam Wan Abdul Hamid is resigning from his post pending the appointment of a new president during an annual general meeting to be held soon.

However, the chief coach of the Terengganu FA has been told to take leave with immediate effect from today following what is believed to be the aftermath of a dismal performance when the Kelantan team overwhelmed Terengganu 6-1 during a Super League match on Friday.

Wan Ahmad Nizam announced his decision during a meeting with State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat this morning.

Rozi, in respecting Wan Ahmad Nizam's decision, said the president had acted professionally and responsibly through his resignation.

He hoped to see a drastic change in terms of management of the Terengganu FA.

"Although the poor performance of the players is not the fault of the management, nevertheless, they should shoulder the responsibility.

"The president will stay on as of now until a new president is appointed soon. There are rules we need to follow during the leadership transition period," he told reporters in his office.

Rozi spent about an hour to hear a briefing from Wan Ahmad Nizam about the deteriorating standard of the Terengganu FA.

Wan Ahmad Nizam, meanwhile, said the change of president and committee members would be done during an annual general meeting soon.

He proposed that the Menteri Besar should take over the post like in most states except Kelantan, Johor and Penang.

"I want to stress that my decision to resign was made on my own accord and not under pressure in any circumstances.

"It has been four years with the Terengganu FA and I think it is enough," he said, adding that a new chief coach will be appointed soon.

Wan Ahmad Nizam said several names had been proposed to take over the post of the chief coach but no decision had been made this far.
