PKR 'not yet convinced' by DAP's snap election plan

PETALING JAYA: PKR is "not yet convinced" with DAP's plans to hold snap elections in Penang, despite their ally's calls to do so.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said PKR is ready to discuss this matter with its Pakatan partners.

"The PKR political bureau's meeting tonight was to discuss several issues, including the suggestion to hold snap elections in Penang.

"The PKR political bureau is yet to be convinced of the purpose or objective to hold the snap polls.

"However, the party leadership is ready to continue discussions with other leaders from Pakatan Harapan component parties," she told reporters briefly, after attending two-hour long meeting at its headquarters, here tonight.

No DAP leaders were present at the meeting, despite rumours saying that they would be available to state their case.

Talks of a possible snap election in Penang have been rife since Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng claimed trial to two counts of abuse of power and graft at the Penang High Court last month.

Lim was charged with abuse of power and corruption over the alleged approval of a rezoning application by Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd to convert agricultural land to residential use; and over the purchase of his RM2.8 million house from Phang at below the market value of RM4.27 million.

He is facing a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of five times the value of gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if convicted on the first charge; and up to two years' imprisonment, a fine and forfeiture of property upon conviction on the second charge.
