Nazri: Penang snap polls a waste of resources

KUALA LUMPUR: Calling for snap polls in Penang is a waste of resources and the DAP-led state administration should focus on governing instead of politicking for one person’s benefit.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the polls was only meant to mask Penang chief minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s mistakes.

Lim was recently hauled to the court over two graft charges.

“It is not wise to call for the snap elections. People will say that it is done just to cover-up his weaknesses or (to a certain extent) influence the courts of law, which (however) I think will not happen.

“Don’t waste time (calling for a polls as) it will involve a lot of money. It is better for the state government to focus on boosting Penang’s economy. Please take pity on the people.

“We can’t always be holding snap elections (whenever there is an issue). Who knows after this, Kelantan and Selangor would want to have snap polls too. Soon the people would have to endure seven or eight elections,” said Nazri at a Press conference at the Tourism Ministry Hari Raya open house yesterday.

He also said the case revealed DAP’s hypocrisy following its recent criticism against Umno for the former’s move to postpone its party election. DAP had recently moved to delay its party polls purportedly to bolster efforts to campaign for the upcoming 14th General Election.

“It is like the pot calling the kettle, black,” said Nazri.

However, Nazri said Barisan Nasional would be ready to contest should the state assembly be dissolved.
