Four Vietnamese vessels detained for illegally fishing in Terengganu waters

KUALA TERENGGANU: Four Vietnamese vessels, worth a total of RM1.7 million, were seized by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for illegally fishing off Terengganu waters, on Friday.

Also detained were 45 fishermen as well as RM18,700 worth of marine products.

MMEA director-general Admiral Datuk Ahmad Puzi Abdul Kahar said the agency also detained two skippers, aged 28 and 46, for attempting to offer a RM2,000 bribe to an officer leading the three-hour operation.

Puzi said the 43 crew members – all aged 17 to 56 – have been remanded until Aug 5 to facilitate investigation under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
