Nineteen motorists slapped with fines for misusing emergency lane

ALOR GAJAH: Nineteen motorists, including a woman, were slapped with fines totalling RM29,100 by the Magistrates Court here today for misusing the emergency lane on the North-South Expressway (NSE).

Magistrate Nor Azizah Yusof fined the traffic offenders between RM1,500 and RM2,000 each, in default of between one and two months' jail, after they pleaded guilty to using the emergency lane.

They had committed the offences at KM222 of the NSE in the district on May 22 at 5pm.

The offenders were charged under Rule 53(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 and punished under Section 119(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Malacca Road Transport Department prosecuting officer Fadzil Abu appeared for the prosecution.

On July 18, 20 motorists, including four women, became the first motorists in the country to be slapped with fines totalling RM28,000 by the magistrate's court here for abusing the highway's emergency lane.
