Thirty one foreign nationals detained in Terengganu immigration swoop

KUALA TERENGAGNU: Thirty one foreign nationals, including an Indonesian woman, were detained in a seven-hour swoop at three locations in Terengganu, for flouting immigration laws.

State Immigration Department enforcement operations officer Mohamad Muda said the woman was picked up in raid at a construction site at Kampung Pertak Batu in Marang.

“Our officers screened 32 foreign workers there and detained 15 of them, including the woman.

“The rest of the detainees are Indonesians, Myanmar nationals, Bangladeshis and Nepalese,” said Mohamad, adding they had flouted Section 6(1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959 for illegal entry into the country.

Another team of officers, he said, raided a sawmill in Setiu and screened 16 foreigners, arresting two Nepalese for breaching Section 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

“The two had work permits for the agriculture sector, not to work in a sawmill,” said Mohamad.

A third team also raided a sawmill in Hulu Terengganu, detaining four Indonesians for illegal entry, after screening eight of them.

“All have been sent to the immigration detention depot in Ajil for further investigations and action,” said Mohamad, adding that 22 immigration and four National Registration Department officers were involved in the operation.
