Penang Umno: Guan Eng should step down due to snap polls snub

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno has urged Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to step down after the PKR snub over DAP's snap polls proposal in the state.

State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman said the latest development clearly showed that Lim had lost the support of the majority of the state assemblymen in the state.

He said that based on last night's PKR meeting, it was clear that all 10 PKR assemblymen in the state were against the snap polls.

"Based on the calculation, it is clear that 21 of the 40 assemblymen in the state are against the snap polls. Only 19 people are in favour of it.

"As such, it can be concluded that Lim has lost the support of the majority of assemblymen in the state.

"He should do the honourable thing by stepping down," he said.

DAP holds 19 seats in the 40-member state legislative while Pas holds one. PKR and Barisan Nasional have 10 seats each.

The PKR central committee, upon deliberation over a three-hour special meeting yesterday, said it was not convinced by the snap polls idea.

Its president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail however said the party was keen to extend its support for DAP as a coalition partner and would continue discussions over the matter.

She said PKR would be sending a high ranking delegation to Penang in due course to explain the matter to the DAP leadership.
